Head ‘Red’ Shiraz, Barossa Valley, South Australia, 2016
One of our favourite producers from the Barossa Valley, Alex Head’s wines speak of regionality and vineyard expression, drawing inspiration from the soils and aspects of the Rhone Valley in France. Young but sophisticated, flavour-packed with plush red and black fruits, subtle spice and smoke notes, and well-balanced tannin. There’s an elegance to this wine that’s hard to deny.
Vinteloper Adelaide Hills Shiraz, 2016
Purveyors of good times and serious wines, the team at Vinteloper are producing some of our favourite wines around at the moment. Located in the cool climate of the Adelaide Hills, the Shiraz the produce is elegant and smooth; with spiced black fruit aromatics leading to a palate that is not packed with alcohol, but is packed with heaps of flavour – think Christmas cake, bay leaves, blackcurrant, with a healthy serving of blue fruit.
Penny’s Hill Cracking Black McLaren Vale Shiraz, 2016
At the helm of the reinvigorated Penny’s Hill is winemaker Alexia Roberts, whose attention to detail and precision has skyrocketed the wines into reviewers’ top picks. Her McLaren Vale Shiraz is a delight, with all the plush, rich warmth that one expects from the Vale, but with a brilliant balance and grace. Dark chocolate, blood plum and notes of smoky charcuterie entice on the palate, with a weight and body that sings out for a barbeque.
Buckshot Shiraz, Heathcote, Victoria, 2016
Heathcote’s red Cambrien soils are famed for producing world class Shiraz, in a unique style that cannot be mimicked by any other region in Australia. The ‘buckshot’ scattered through the best sites, an ironstone and quartz gravel that is thought to contribute to the flavour profile that Heathcote is known for: black pepper, dark plum, and loads of spice. The wines are deep and velvety, with fine, structured tannins that enhance its ability to age.
Graillot Syrah No. 2, Heathcote, Victoria, 2016
Alain Graillot is a famed winemaker from France’s Rhône Valley, founding his domaine in Crozes-Hermitage in 1985 and rapidly becoming one of the region’s top producers. With Bibendum’s Robert Walters, Graillot Australia was set-up to produce elegant wines from a beautiful vineyard site in Heathcote. Unlike the Buckshot, this shows a different side of Heathcote; intensely aromatic, elegant rather than opulent, and produced in a Syrah (Northern Rhône) style.
Château de Ségriès Côtes-du-Rhône, 2015
Located in Lirac, adjacent to Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Château de Ségriès is famed for producing high quality Côtes-du-Rhône – so much so that only 150 cases make it to Australia as the local demand is so high. A blend of Grenache, Syrah, Cinsault and Carignan, this is a rich, rounded wine with lashings of raspberry, white pepper, charcuterie and cloves, with a moreish texture. The perfect introduction to the sumptuous wines of the Rhône Valley.
